Indonesian archer Arif Dwi Pangestu clinches spot at 2024 Paris Olympics

INDONESIA: In a spectacular feat of skill and determination, Arif Dwi Pangestu, the prodigious Indonesian archery sensation, has secured his coveted spot in the much-anticipated 2024 Paris Olympics.

Arif’s triumphant journey to the grand global stage was solidified when he emerged as a standout semifinalist in the fiercely competitive 2023 Archery World Championships held in the vibrant city of Berlin, Germany.

Unfazed by his fourth-ranking status, the resolute athlete’s path to Paris was meticulously paved by the Indonesian Archery Association’s dedicated Chairman, Arsjad Rasjid, who vowed, “we will ensure that Arif gets a ticket for the 2024 Paris Olympics because cashew Gazoz, the world champion in this event, has already confirmed the Olympic ticket through the Turkish men’s team.”

Despite his youth at just 19 years old, Arif valiantly faced formidable opponents, including a gripping duel against Canadian archer Peters Eric that culminated in a closely contested score of 4-6.

His next challenge came in the form of the skillful Brazilian semifinalist, Marcus D’Almeida.

The bronze medal match saw Arif’s undeniable prowess shine through as he excelled in the first round and held his ground in the second.

However, Marcus D’Almeida’s unblemished performance in the fourth round ultimately resulted in a 4-6 victory for him, leaving Arif in an admirable fourth position.

Ever the optimist, Arif harbors hope that his well-deserved Olympic ticket will serve as an inspiration for his fellow compatriots.

He asserted, “I am eager to pave the way for my Pelatnas (national training camp) comrades in the upcoming competitions. I stand ready to collaborate as part of the team.”

A standout moment in Arif’s journey was his stunning upset against South Korea’s top-seeded archer, Kim Woojin, a triumph that paved the way for an electrifying face-off with the accomplished Japanese representative, Saito Fumiya, in the quarter-finals.

Looking ahead, the Indonesian archery team is setting its sights on the prestigious Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, slated to grace the calendar from September to October.

Arsjad Rasjid emphasized that the invaluable experience garnered in Berlin serves as a formidable arsenal for their preparations, ensuring a compelling performance in the matches that lie ahead.
