SINGAPORE: A 33-year-old Singaporean woman appeared in court on Tuesday (1 Aug) facing charges of ill-treatment towards her four children, allegedly splashing hot water on them and causing scald burns on their bodies.

The woman was handed four charges of ill-treating children in her care. According to the charge sheets, all the alleged offences occurred between 6 am and about 9.30 am on 2 July last year at a flat in Tampines.

Singapore state media CNA reported that the woman’s identity is protected by gag orders due to safeguarding the children’s anonymity.

Reportedly, the woman splashed hot water on her three daughters aged eight, 10, and 11, along with her nine-year-old son.

The children experienced “superficial partial thickness” burns on their hands, chest, thighs, or arms, ranging from 1% to 10% of their total body surface area.

The most severe injuries were suffered by the 10-year-old girl, who sustained scalds on her left arm, abdomen, and both thighs.

During the court hearing, the prosecutor requested bail of S$15,000 for the accused, with the additional condition of no contact with the victims.

As of now, the children have been placed in a shelter, as revealed in court. The accused stated that she lives alone with her children and is divorced.

The next court appearance for the accused is scheduled for later this month.

If found guilty of ill-treating a child under the Children and Young Persons Act, the woman could face a sentence of up to eight years in jail, a fine of up to S$8,000, or both.
