SINGAPORE — A video captured an SMRT bus captain eating and using his handphone while driving.

The bus captain has been suspended by the company following the incident.

On Saturday, a TikTok user named painhub243b uploaded a 35-second long video, showing a bus captain repeatedly not holding the steering wheel and using his phone while driving on the expressway during service 960.

The video was recorded on May 12th at 7:20 PM, as stated in the description.

SMRT Bus Service 960 is a trunk route linking Woodlands Bus Interchange and Marina Centre Terminal, passing through Woodlands Road, Bukit Panjang, Bukit Timah, Rochor Canal, Victoria Street and Bras Basah.

In the video, the bus captain can be seen completely removing both hands from the steering wheel while consuming food.

Later in the video, he is shown using his phone with only one hand on the steering wheel.

According to the local media outlet Stomp, Vincent Gay, deputy managing director of SMRT Buses, responded to the incident, confirming that the company has suspended the bus captain from duty for further investigation.

“We do not condone unsafe driving behaviour, ” Mr Gay added, reiterating that SMRT bus captains are consistently reminded to observe all safety and road regulations.
