SINGAPORE —  Members of Parliament (MP) from the Workers’ Party were heartened by donations received from the public for those less-fortunate families during Chinese New Year, making the “Kampung spirit” alive.

On CNY eve (21 January), He Ting Ru, Workers’ Party’s MP for Sengkang GRC shared that they had called for the donation of packs of rice to less fortunate families during the festive season.

And to their happy surprise, a “mountain of rice” was collected by the MPs.

“We also asked for donations of packets of rice for Sengkang GRC residents who may need a little more help at the moment. Swipe to see the mountain of rice we collected — our hearts are so full!!”

In the photo shared by Ms He, other Sengkang MP, Jamus Lim, and Chua Kheng Wee, and MP for Aljunied GRC Faisal Manap were seen hugging the “rice pack mountain” contributed by good Samaritans.

In another post, Ms He’s colleague Jamus Lim confirmed that WP’s volunteers have distributed the rice pack to those needy families.

“In addition to the rice, we had received generous donations of bak kwa as well as mandarins, which we were also able to share.”

He added that WP’s Sengkang team also gave out oranges and a small angpow for their hardworking cleaning crew of the estate, who had been pulling longer hours in the runup to the weekend.

“They were working to make sure that spring cleaning junk was disposed of quickly, and that the estate was spick and span, ready to welcome visitors, ” he said.

Although the rice pack donation from residents was overwhelming, Jamus Lim reassured that they will use these donations for their more regular food distributions in support of needy families in the town.

“To all the generous hearts: thank you! This spirit of care and exchange is so much of what the season is about, ” he said.

Workers’ Party chairman Sylvia Lim distributed CNY goodies bags to underprivileged residents

A week before CNY, Worker Party’s Paya Lebar Division held their Chinese food distribution program to distribute goodie packs packed with CNY foodstuff to those underprivileged residents in Paya Lebar.

Sylvia Lim, Workers’ Party chairman and MP for Aljunied GRC, distributed the goodie bag to program beneficiaries and residents at rental blocks.

According to a Facebook post on WP’s Aljunied GRC official page, this festive celebration with underprivileged residents in Paya Lebar “is only made possible because of sponsors, supporters and volunteers who contribute their money, goods, time and energy to do good.”

“Each pack contained not just Lunar New Year foodstuff but also our wishes of abundance and prosperity for our residents,” the post wrote.
