SINGAPORE — There is a lot the mainstream media is complicit in, such as not calling out the Government when it clearly practises double standards in enforcing the law or principles which it keeps demanding of others.
For example, Christopher de Souza has already been found guilty of professional misconduct by a Disciplinary Tribunal and faces possible disciplinary sanction before the Court of Three Judges, yet, he remains as Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
The People’s Action Party (PAP) said it would wait till after his appeal to decide on what to do with him.
And what is the Speaker of Parliament, Tan Chuan-jin doing? Not even a suspension from duties pending de Souza’s appeal?
When the High Court passed down its judgement on the Workers’ Party’s town-council case, the hyenas in the PAP so quickly convened a special session of Parliament and demanded that the WP town councillors remove themselves from being involved in decisions made by the town council on financial matters.
WP Members of Parliament Sylvia Lim and Pritam Singh kept reminding Heng Swee Keat and the Parliament that they were going to appeal the judgement and asked for the Government to hold its horses until then.
The PAP refused and went on a whole big wayang about integrity, principles, and whatnot, and Tan Chuan-jin sat right there in Parliament listening to all this.
Yet now, his own Deputy Speaker has been found guilty, and he has done nothing.
Heng, who moved the motion to censure the WP leaders, is now also silent, and so did K Shanmugam, who made a whole song and dance in Parliament.
Christopher de Souza should, at the very least, be suspended from duties as Dep Speaker.
The media here has not said a word about it, besides reporting the conviction.
Singapore is sadly going down this road where the elites connected to the PAP are treated very differently from the common people.
Even a forklift driver who collected bribes of S$1 was sentenced to 2 months in jail and a S$4,870 fine.
The rich and connected, on the other hand, get away scot-free.
The media here is complicit in not bringing to Singaporeans’ attention these very troubling developments.
