JOHOR, MALAYSIA — Residents of Taman Perdana, Kluang were shocked when two uninvited jumbo guests appeared in their neighbourhood — a mother elephant and her calf that were separated from their herd.

According to Malaysia media, The Star, the incident occurred around 9.30pm on Wednesday (11 Jan) night.

A video shared by netizen DrElanthevan Annamalai shows the jumbo duo entering one of the residential houses, damaging the gate.

The mother elephant and calf left the house via the house’s backyard facing the oil palm plantation.

Another video posted on “Aku Budak Kluang” Facebook page shows excited residents following the elephants, some even taking videos to record the unusual event in the neighbourhood.

Aminuddin Jamin, director of the Johor Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), said that the two elephants were separated from their small herd of five.

“We acted on the report (and) used a drone to track and monitor the elephants’ movements. They have returned to their habitat, which is the forest near the residential area.”
