Below is the New Year Message from Dr Tan Cheng Bock, Chairman of Progress Singapore Party.

A happy New Year to one and all!

2022 was a challenging year for me.

I underwent 2 major operations to remove a non-malignant right lower lung lobe and had an extended 28-day hospital stay. During that difficult and sometimes traumatic period, I am grateful for the support of my wife and family. It also makes me especially thankful for my health now.

But 2022 was also the time when many COVID restrictions were finally lifted. As someone who was not vaccinated (due to a past adverse vaccination reaction where I developed meningitis and was close to death – this was some 10 years ago), it had been an isolating time. So now, I am really enjoying the blessing of gatherings with friends and family.

Looking ahead, I see 2023 as very challenging.

Singaporeans will have to contend with high inflation and a rising cost of living – made worse by the increased Goods and Services Tax (GST). Increasing global competition and regional conflicts threaten the global economy. COVID is also not entirely resolved and this adds to the uncertainty.

This year, we will also be electing our next president. I hope Singaporeans will be given a choice to elect their president, and that there will be no walkovers.

So an exciting year ahead! In the meantime, may I wish all Singaporeans good health and a good year ahead.

Gerald Giam calls for education system reform and improved financial literacy in Singapore

Mr Gerald Giam, a Workers’ Party Member of Parliament for Aljunied GRC, expressed concerns about the negative effects of exams on students and how they can motivate students to aim for test mastery, instead of subject mastery. He argued that the current education system needs to be less of a sorting mechanism and more of a launchpad for students to discover their strengths and interests and develop deep skills in their areas of interest. He also highlighted the need to improve financial literacy among Singaporeans, proposing three suggestions to systematically uplift the financial literacy of Singaporeans.
