Timeline: Twitter mayhem since Elon Musk’s takeover

The majority of users voted in support of Elon Musk stepping down as head of Twitter after the billionaire posted a 12-hour poll on his Twitter account to ask users’ opinions on the matter.

Musk added that he would abide by the result of the poll.

The choice of “Yes” won winning by a clear margin with 57.5 per cent against 42.5 per cent who vote for “No.”

Around 17.5 million people participated in the poll.

Mr Beast, the richest YouTuber creator replied to Musk’s tweet, saying, “If you’re going to keep doing stuff like this, Yes.”

In his response, Mr Beast shared the new rules of Twitter, which said that at both the Tweet level and account level, it will remove any free promotion of prohibited 3rd-party social media platforms. such as linking out (i.e. using URLs).

The prohibited platforms are Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Post, and Nostr.

It also prohibited 3rd-party social media link aggregators, such as link.ee, Ink.bio.

Twitter was purchased by Musk on 14 April 2022.

He then dissolved the director board for Twitter before he completed his US$44 billion acquisition of the company.

Musk then became the sole director of the company “in accordance with the terms of the Merger Agreement,” the company told the Securities and Exchange Commission in October.

Since then, he has taken many controversial steps along the way.

On 1 November, Musk announced the site will charge $8 per month to verify the accounts of celebrities and companies. This was a service that used to be free.

On 4 November, half of Twitter’s 7,500-strong staff were fired. In a tweet, Musk said, “Unfortunately there is no choice when the company is losing over $4M/day”.

On November 16, Musk delivered an ultimatum to Twitter staff, asking them to choose between being “extremely hardcore” and working long hours, or losing their jobs. He gives them a day to decide. Then large numbers of staff quit.

On 29 November, Musk tweeted that he was going “to war’ with Apple. He claimed that he had threatened to oust Twitter from its App Store. He then conducted a meeting with Apple boss Tim Cook and said that the clash was a misunderstanding.

In mid-December, Musk relaunches Twitter Blue. This time, Twitter conducts a review of the account before giving it the coveted blue check mark.

On 15 December, Twitter suspended the accounts of more than a half-dozen journalists, including reporters from CNN, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. Musk accuses them of endangering his family through their reporting on Twitter’s shutdown of an account that tracked flights of his private jet. However, some of the accounts have been re-activated.
