SINGAPORE — Last Sunday (18 Sep), Member of Parliament for Choa Chu Kang GRC, Mr Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim, surprised his residents by handing out free breakfast from an Old Chang Kee food truck, parked below an HDB block.

Choa Chu Kang resident Jayrzzz, who lives at Choa Chu Kang Ave 4, took videos and put them up on TikTok.

“It turns out I’m getting free breakfast,” Jayrzzz wrote after he went downstairs from his block to investigate.

Indeed, at the food truck, despite the rainy weather, many Choa Chu Kang residents were queuing up, eagerly waiting in line to grab the free Old Chang Kee snacks from MP Zhulkarnain.

“Thank you MP Zhulkarnain,” a grateful Jayrzzz wrote. “Got me a curry puff, chicken nugget and hotdogs,” he wrote.

The MP was also seen waving to the residents cheering from their flats upstairs during the rainy morning.

Online, residents from the other estates appeared to be rather jealous, like this Tampines resident who tagged his MP Baey Yam Keng, asking him to do the same.

@jayrzzz.cyril what a wonderful start, we love free food 😍 @oldchangkeesingapore ♬ Funny Song – Cavendish Music

Big Drop In PAP Votes In Chua Chu Kang GRC

It’s not surprising that PAP MP Zhulkarnain is trying his best to drum up support for his party, given that there was a big drop in support for the party during the last General Election.

In 2015, PAP garnered a record 76.9% votes in Chua Chu Kang GRC. But 5 years later in the last General Election in 2020, PAP’s votes dropped significantly, obtaining only 58.6%. There was an 18.3% swing against the ruling party.

Perhaps MP Zhulkarnain thought that with more free food being handed out, votes for Chua Chu Kang GRC might improve. The GRC was helmed by Minister Gan Kim Yong who is currently the minister for trade and industry. Previously, he was the health minister and before that, the manpower minister. He was the manpower minister from 2009 to 2011 when Singapore began to import a large number of foreign talents.

While some netizens had cheered MP Zhulkarnain for his magnanimous gesture, others were not so positive.

On the Hardware Zone, netizens posted comments which were not so supportive:

“give curry puff take back chicken pie”

“So taxpayers money funded this?”

“wow election coming soon ah? or he running for president?”

“On one hand fight diabetes etc, On the other hand collaborate with OCK to give free fried stuff”

“Wayang sai, probably to win some vote from gain peng people.”

“Sinkies are forgetful greedy people, how else pappies can rule year after year? Look at how pa splash money on events know liao”

“Sinkies are cheapskates. All it takes is free unhealthy food to sell your soul to pappy.”

“Alamak … how come moi estate no have? how come moi MPs and GRCs no give? so unfair …. angry siah … like that dont blame moi no sarpok them in the next erection hor”

“Actually it is paid using taxpayer money right? Why need thank him?… Many times sinkie quite naive. Always thanks East Coast Heng n LW for giving money. But it is actually our money”

Edwin Tong says tender for Ramadan Bazaar is to get bidder with best proposal, but price takes up 60% of evaluation criteria

The Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar in Singapore is managed by Wisma Geylang Serai under the People’s Association (PA), with the operating right for the annual event being tendered out in November 2022. A consortium of three companies won the tender for S$2.26m, with the price taking up 60% of the evaluation criteria. The high price of rental for vendors has been criticized, and some have struggled to secure a space due to having to bid high. Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and deputy chairman of PA, stated that the tender is meant to get the bidder with the best expertise, experience, and proposal to manage and run the bazaar, not necessarily the highest bidder. He also noted that a substantial amount of the tender goes back into the event, its programming, and the light-up.
