The National University of Singapore Society (NUSS) on Friday (13 Aug) said that it will remove the signs put up at sports facilities, given that Sport Singapore (SportSG) has advised that the demarcation of changing rooms for vaccinated and unvaccinated users in sports facilities is not necessary.

This came a day after it was reported on Thursday (12 Aug) that People’s Voice (PV) Party chief Lim Tean slammed NUSS for disallowing unvaccinated individuals from using public toilets in its sports facilities, saying that the move is “deeply offensive”.

In his Facebook post on Wednesday, Mr Lim included a photo of a sign put up at NUSS, which reads: “These changing rooms/toilets are only for vaccinated users”.

NUSS responded that its demarcation of the toilets and changing rooms for vaccinated and unvaccinated users in its sports complex was in compliance with SportSG’s directives and guidelines.

It cited one of the requirements highlighted in the guidelines: “Enterprises will also have to ensure that vaccinated individuals who participate in such activities do not mix with other users for the entire time they are within the facility (including in common areas such as changing rooms and toilets)”.

The move, however, received backlash from many netizens as they think that it was “divisive” and a form of “discrimination”.

NUSS subsequently issued a statement on Friday, noting that it will remove the signs and allow both vaccinated and unvaccinated users to use the common changing rooms in its sports facilities.

“Sport Singapore has since advised that notwithstanding paragraph 6 of the SportSG guidelines dated 7 August, it is not necessary to segregate the unvaccinated and vaccinated in the Sports Complex changing rooms and toilets.

“We will therefore remove the signs and allow both the vaccinated and unvaccinated members and guests to use the common changing rooms in the Sports Complex,” it stated.
