Several Members of Parliament (MPs) from the People’s Action Party (PAP) have suspended their physical Meet-the-People Session (MPS) with their GRC/SMC residents, amid the recent surge in Singapore’s COVID-19 community cases.

Singapore recorded the first double-digit daily in months on 29 Apr, with 16 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases, which is a sharp increase from just three cases the day before.

As of Monday (3 May), the city-state reported 10 infections in the community, all of whom are either patients and staff at Tan Tock Seng Hospital or close contacts of previous cases who had already been placed on quarantine.

Following that, the PAP has advised its branches to hold MPS virtually or by phone in a bid to minimise exposure of residents and volunteers.

“The health and safety of our residents and volunteers is paramount. These measures, though inconvenient, are a reassurance of that,” it wrote in a statement on Monday.

A number of PAP MPs have also announced on their Facebook page the suspension of their MPS until further notice, while some said that they will not be holding physical MPS for at least two weeks.
