The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) on Monday (15 Mar) announced a new 10-session programme for Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) operationally-ready national servicemen (NSmen) who cannot pass their individual physical proficiency test (IPPT), which is slated to be launched in April.

In a statement today, MINDEF said that the National Service Fitness Improvement Training (NS FIT) programme will replace the IPPT preparatory training (IPT) and remedial training (RT) programmes.

It noted that the new programme – which was introduced in collaboration with the Health Promotion Board (HPB) and Sport Singapore (SportSG) – will be conducted at 42 sites, up from the previous 13 locations, with three upcoming ActiveSG Gym sites.

“Instead of attending the IPPT Preparatory Training (IPT) or Remedial Training (RT) programmes, NSmen will now need to either pass IPPT or complete the 10-session NS FIT programme (inclusive of one IPPT attempt).

“This streamlines the annual fitness requirements for NSmen and further encourages them to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle, and remain operationally ready,” said the Ministry.

NSmen will be able to register for NS FIT sessions through the NS portal from 25 March onwards.

MINDEF noted that the NS FIT comprises 10 sessions, each with a duration of 65 to 75 minutes, with activities like aerobic thresholds, metabolic circuits, weight loss, games-based activities and IPPT-specific exercises.

It added that NSmen can also participate in FIT@HPB Quick HIIT, a form of metabolic circuit training that features short bursts of high-intensity exercises that builds strength, endurance and aerobic fitness over time.

NSmen are also able to participate in fitness activities and exercise programmes in the community together with their family and friends, said MINDEF.

“When they participate in FIT@HPB Quick HIIT, their friends and family may join them by booking a slot for the same HPB Quick HIIT session via HPB’s Healthy 365 mobile app,” it noted.

According to MINDEF, the Home Team will also be adopting NS FIT for Home Team NSmen from June onwards, with training conducted at Home Team premises, HomeTeamNS Clubhouses and ActiveSG Gyms.

“More details will be shared at a later date,” said the Ministry.
