About 2,551 people have donated to the family of a Myanmar domestic worker Piang Ngaih Don, who was abused to death by her employers, and raised over S$200,000 as of Wednesday (3 Mar), said Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics (HOME).
Piang, 24-year-old, was starved and abused by her employer Gaiyathiri Murugayan until she weighed 24kg days before she died in 2016 from a brain injury.
The deceased foreign domestic worker had lost 38 per cent of her body weight since she started working with the family on 28 May 2015.
On 23 Feb, her employer Gaiyathiri had pleaded guilty to 28 charges including culpable homicide, voluntarily causing grievous hurt by starvation and wrongful restraint. She also admitted to starving, abusing, and chaining Piang who was under her employment for 10 months.
It was said that Piang has left behind a son in Myanmar.
Following the case, HOME on Thursday (25 Feb) has offered to assist in transferring donations from members of the public to her family, saying that many have reached out expressing their desire to help and support Piang’s family.
A few days later, the organisation announced on Facebook that it has received S$206,565.40 from 2,551 donors.
“The entire funds received since the start of collection will be 100 per cent transferred to Ms. Piang’s family,” it wrote on Wednesday (3 Mar).
HOME noted that it would stop collecting any further donations with immediate effect.
“As highlighted by our internal compliance and governance, we are required to stop receiving any further donations on behalf of Ms. Phiang’s family with immediate effect,” it said.
The organization said it is working closely with Myanmar Club – which promotes the welfare of Myanmar nationals in Singapore – and the Myanmar Embassy, who will further assist HOME in the remitting of funds to Piang’s family.
“We assure that all your donations will reach the family,” it added.
