How long does it take for the authority to fix a flooding issue in Singapore?

Answer: 10 years!

Jokes aside, it appears that the Public Utilities Board (PUB) has finally decided to take action to solve a flooding issue that has plagued a neighbourhood in Joo Seng for nearly 10 years.

Singapore People’s Party (SPP) chairman Jose Raymond took to his Facebook on Thursday (26 Nov) to share the good news to residents of Block 14 Joo Seng.

Citing an email he received from PUB, Mr Raymond said that the PUB has “given specific engineering solutions” to both the Housing & Development Board (HDB) and the Jalan Besar Town Council to solve the decade-long flooding problems in the housing estate around Block 14 Joo Seng.

The drainage improvement works will be done in “due course” which should put an end to the consistent flooding issues once and for all, he added.

Mr Raymond went on to thank the residents who had voiced their concerns on the matter with him.

“To the residents who raised the matter with me, thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to help all of you.”

He also thanked those who had personally wrote in to PUB to demand for action to be taken.

“To a few other concerned citizens who wrote in to PUB, my gratitude for helping residents of Joo Seng who have been enduring this for 10 years or so.”

For those who are unaware, Joo Seng is located in Upper Aljunied – which is part of Potong Pasir SMC – and falls under the Jalan Besar Town Council jurisdiction.

Earlier this month (2 Nov), Mr Raymond went live on Facebook, recording the situation on the ground at Block 14 Joo Seng to highlight the flooding issue.

According to the SPP chairman, the flooding has been an ongoing concern in Joo Seng for a decade.

“The live video makes it very clear why this is a problem which needs to be solved through better rainwater management, widening of drains for quicker flow or even the use of permeable pavements in the affected areas,” he wrote in his post.
