Local bookstore and publisher Epigram Books took to its Facebook on Tuesday (27 Oct) to express gratitude to Yap Boh Tiong, chairman of Mileage Communications Group – Singapore’s largest homegrown public relations agency – for buying more than 160 children’s book from its bookshop in the name of charity.
“We wanna say a huge THANK YOU to Yap Boh Tiong, who popped over to the Huggs-Epigram Coffee Bookshop last Friday and bought more than 160 children’s books (yes, you read that right)! The best part is—they’re being given to a school library,” it wrote.
Speaking to Epigram, Mr Yap said that the purchase of the 164 children’s books will contribute to the bottom line of the bookstore, given that its revenue has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Secondly, it also supports the local authors who have limited income during the shutdown. And thirdly, the books will be donated to the library of a primary school. I believe in the domino effect of benefitting many when it comes to any [corporate social responsibility] CSR effort,” he added.
In a blog post by Mileage Communications on Thursday (29 Oct), the company noted that all 164 books were handed over to Ms Rina Liang, principal of Dazhong Primary School, earlier on Monday (26 Oct).
It continued, “This school has performed well over the past few years with students attaining good results in their Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLEs), and it is also where the company’s Executive Director offers her services as Chairperson of the School’s Advisory Committee.
“The school librarians and students were grateful for the contribution, and Mileage Communications is certain that this will expand the school’s repository of library books.”
