Higher learning institutes in Singapore will be rolling out four new SkillsFuture Work-Study Programmes in the next two years.

Minister of State (Ministry of Education and Ministry of Manpower) Gan Siow Huang announced the new programmes at the virtual SkillsFuture Work-Study Fair on Wednesday (12 August) in conjunction with SkillsFuture Month.

One of the new programmes include the first SkillsFuture Work-Study Degree Programme to be delivered in a Place-and-Train mode, namely the Bachelor of Technology in Computing Work-Study Degree, said SkillsFuture Singapore in a statement today.

The new work-study degree course will be offered by the National University of Singapore (NUS) in partnership with SkillsFuture Singapore and Singapore-based global consumer Internet company Sea starting the middle of this month.

Participants will undergo workplace-based training, assignments and assessments, which will make up nearly 30 per cent of credits towards the degree.

Upon completion of the three-and-a-half-year programme, trainees will graduate with a Bachelor of Technology Degree conferred by NUS and have the opportunity to further progress in the company to become full-time analysts, said SkillsFuture Singapore.

Around 120 places will be allocated for graduates of the programme over the next five years.

NUS and Sea are also partnering with Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Singapore Polytechnic (SP) to invite the polytechnics’ graduates to participate in the Work-Study Degree Programme for its inaugural run.

Enrolment for subsequent intakes will be open to eligible Polytechnic graduates from relevant disciplines, said SkillsFuture Singapore.

Three other new SkillsFuture Work-Study Programmes will be introduced by Nanyang Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic in the fields of biomedical sciences and media.

Nanyang Polytechnic will be rolling out a new Work-Study Post Diploma (Specialist Diploma in Digital Content Creation for E-Commerce) starting September this year.

The course aims to equip participants with e-commerce and digital content creation skills to support organisations and businesses in creating and delivering engaging contents across multiple digital channels, said SkillsFuture Singapore.

Republic Polytechnic will be offering Work-Study Certificates leading to a Part-Time Diploma in Business Practice (Digital Marketing and Branding) starting October this year.

The programme aims to equip Institute of Technical Education (ITE) graduates with practical digital marketing and branding skills and to provide participants with a head-start in a digital marketing career.

Temasek Polytechnic will launch new Work-Study Certificates leading to a Part-Time Diploma in Applied Science (Veterinary Technology) for ITE graduates in April 2021.

Participants will receive training in veterinary diagnostics and be equipped with knowledge and skills related to animal care and welfare.

Singapore Polytechnic (SP) has signed a five-year partnership with the Singapore Accreditation Council (SAC) to enhance the curriculum for its Work-Study Diploma in Applied Science (Chemical Laboratory Technology).

With the enhanced curriculum, participants will adopt the latest knowledge and skills in laboratory management, which will prepare them to take on critical job roles in the growing chemicals, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology sectors.

Upon completion of the programme, graduates will receive an additional industry-recognised certificate jointly awarded by the SAC and SP, said SkillsFuture Singapore.

Students and graduates will also be able to benefit from the creation of a new SkillsFuture Work-Study Portal.

The new portal will assist them in learning more about SkillsFuture Work-Study Programmes of their interest and signing up for the opportunities posted by participating companies.

Employers can also use the portal to register their interest to participate in the SkillsFuture Work-Study Programmes, put up job vacancies and hire suitable trainees through the various Work-Study Programmes.

Over 130 SkillsFuture Work-Study opportunities from more than 80 companies are featured on the portal at present, said SkillsFuture Singapore.
