This year’s National Day Parade (NDP) mobile column travelled along five routes across Singapore on Sunday (9 Aug) – the North, Northeast, South, Southeast and West – with 66 assets from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and Singapore Police Force (SPF).

The mobile column travelled about 200km in total, marking the longest distance for any mobile column into the heartlands. Each route had about 13 vehicles and 60 to 70 participants, including about 100 frontline staff and essential workers aboard the mobile column.

One of the main highlights of the NDP2020 was the Red Lions parachuting display, who made their way to the Sengkang General Hospital – which has been supporting migrant workers at the S11 Dormitory at Punggol amid the pandemic – to salute the healthcare workers.

The mobile column travelled past Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Sengkang General Hospital, Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and Singapore EXPO, where it performed a salute to all healthcare workers for their efforts in fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here are some of the NDP2020 mobile column at the Lakeside MRT:

Six F-15 fighter jets paid tribute to the frontline workers, flying over eight hospitals – Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Sengkang General Hospital, Changi General Hospital, Khoo Teck Puat General Hospital, Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, National University Hospital, Alexandra Hospital, and Singapore General Hospital –  in a tight Delta formation shaped like an arrowhead.

The jets also performed a 30-minute long aeriel display – Roar of Unity – across the island as a sign of unity in Singapore as well as a gesture of paying tribute to the frontline essential workers.

Members of the public gathered to catch sight of the vehicles at various estates, including Woodlands, Lakeside, Bedok and Ang Mo Kio.

Some unwanted incidents reportedly took place during the occasion, however.

In a video that has been circulating on social media, a motorcyclist can be seen attempting to dash across a cross junction when the traffic was at a standstill to make way for the NDP2020 mobile column to pass through.

He was then stopped by a traffic marshal who was stationed at the cross junction. Subsequently, the motorcyclist pushed his motorcycle back to safety.

MSF reports 40% decrease in rough sleepers, but temporary shelter occupancy increases sixfold from 2019 to 2021

Singapore’s Ministry of Social and Family Development has reported a significant decrease in rough sleepers from 921 in 2019 to 530 in 2022. However, a veteran blogger in Singapore, Leong Sze Hian, has pointed out that while the number of rough sleepers decreased, the occupancy in temporary shelters had increased by more than sixfold, from 65 to 420, from 2019-2021. This means that only half the story is being told, and the full statistics on homelessness in Singapore are yet to be released.
