Workers’ Party (WP) chief Pritam Singh pointed out the importance of conducting house visits for alternative party MPs and MPs-elect. He said this after he resumed meeting residents in the Eunos ward of Aljunied GRC post-GE2020 on Wednesday (15 July).
“Great to be back meeting residents in the Eunos ward of Aljunied GRC over house visits this evening after GE2020. House visits are an important touch point for opposition MPs and MPs-elect,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
Mr Singh stressed that going for house visits helps the party to “achieve a better understanding of what is topmost on the minds of our residents and friends”.
During last Friday’s GE, WP won the Aljunied GRC by securing 59.93 percent of the votes, beating People’s Action Party (PAP) who only managed to garner 40.07 percent of the votes.
In Mr Singh’s post, he revealed a number of problems that the residents shared with him during the house visits which include retrenchment issues due to COVID-19 pandemic, unstable job market as well as securing a second career to deal with the bleak economic outlook.
“Today, I met a long-time union leader with the SATS Workers Union who shared about the recent retrenchment of a few hundred Malaysian workers arising from the economic impact of COVID-19 and the prospect of no bonuses this year for those still with a job,” the alternative party politician wrote.
He added, “Another gentleman was pursuing an advanced degree in Artificial Intelligence with a view to kickstart a second career when the upswing comes.”
“Unsurprisingly, jobs and the need to adjust to new economic circumstances came up on a few occasions.”
If that’s not all, Mr Singh also said that some residents voiced municipal concerns like lifts and lighting issues at Blk 654 in the ward.
“A number of municipal concerns like when the lifts in the block will be upgraded/replaced came up especially since the lifts at 650,651,652 and 653 have already been changed by AHTC two-odd years ago.
“AHTC’s lift replacement plans call for all lifts in Jalan Tenaga to be replaced in the next three years. Another resident shared about lighting issues at the short linkway between Blk 654 and the Blk 651A MSCP. I will ask AHTC to look into these matters,” he noted.
