WP MP for Sengkang GRC He Ting Ru noted in a Facebook post that she was at the Elections Department (ELD) with several of her WP teammates on Wednesday (15 July) to witness the counting of overseas ballots.
She wrote, “This time it felt even more important that we be there to witness this, as stories were told to us about fellow Singaporeans who made long and epic journeys to the few overseas polling stations provided.”
“Some are even now serving out their quarantine after voting as a result of travel restrictions due to the global pandemic that still rages on.”
Ms He added that she is “deeply touched by their love for the country and our future.”
Hougang SMC MP Dennis Tan Lip Fong, who was also there, revealed in his own Facebook post that the vote for Hougang was 35 for WP and 15 for their opponent the People’s Action Party (PAP).
He added, “I really do appreciate the trouble that many overseas voters have taken in order to vote [for example] those who had to travel far to one of the few cities or countries (e.g travelling from one country in Europe to London) and some even had to serve time in quarantine after returning from voting.”
Mr Tan thanked Singaporeans voters overseas for making their vote count and hoped that “the PAP government will make it easier for all overseas Singaporeans to vote in the near future.”
WP’s Yee Jenn Jong who contested in Marine Parade GRC shared a photo of the overseas vote count for that ward showing that the PAP had garnered 210 of the 407 overseas votes while the WP managed 197. Two votes were spoilt.
Mr Yee wrote in his Facebook post, “We truly appreciate those who had made their way to vote especially when travel was so difficult during this pandemic. Truly you have #MadeYourVoteCount.”
One of WP’s East Coast GRC candidates, Terence Tan, also shared a photo on Facebook of that constituencies’ overseas vote count in which the WP garnered 147 votes of East Coast GRC residents who are currently abroad while PAP got 135.
The WP politician said, “Thank you to all voters who were able to make their way to exercise their constitutional right.”
Also present was Aljunied GRC MP Gerald Giam who shared several photos of the WP team who were there.
Other WP politicians who were present also shared their appreciation for overseas voters including Ron Tan who said in a Facebook post after the counting, “Overseas Singaporeans took great efforts to make their votes count, we must respect this and honour the voting system.”
Dylan Ng simply wrote, “Thank you overseas voters…”, and shared a photo of the East Coast GRC overseas vote count.
Kenneth Foo said in his post, “Thank you overseas voters for your support. We know that many of you had to endure travelling long distance just to cast the vote. We respect your love for our country.”
