Someone who goes by the name of Arasi CP posted on Facebook that her elderly 80-year-old mother was allegedly pressured by an Indian polling agent to vote for the People’s Action Party (PAP). She went as far as to tell her exactly which box to stamp on for PAP.

“The female polling agent insisted on my mother to vote for PAP while assisting her inside the polling area,” Ms Arasi wrote in the post.

Although her mother was accompanied by her sister, the agent told her that she would assist her mother from then on.

“Coercing the public on who to vote is not their role as polling agents. These actions by PAP supporters must be condemned,” Ms Arasi asserted.

The Elections Department (ELD) said on Friday (10 Jul) it was aware of this Facebook post.

“These are serious allegations,” ELD said, asking the voter to contact the department with the full details.

In an update, Ms Arasi has affirmed that her mother’s experience was factual. She has reported to the ELD, where a higher official assured her that she did not need to file a report.
