The chief of Peoples Voice (PV) party Lim Tean hosted his last online rally on Facebook Live earlier today (8 July), focusing on People’s Action Party’s (PAP) Chan Chun Sing’s leaked audio.

In regards to Mr Chan’s leaked audio, it was revealed that the PAP had used various crises to save his party by calling for General Election (GE) during inconvenient times.

Upon hearing the audio recording, Mr Lim was furious about the leak. He did not accept Mr Chan’s later statement refuting that the recording was “taken out of context”.

The PV chief recalled how the ruling party claimed that Singapore needs to hold a GE now as their parliamentary term is ending in January 2021 despite the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

Understanding that the situation could not be changed, he still believed that the Government should have stabilised the coronavirus situation first before carrying on with the election.

“This government has been changing the constitution for about 50 times since independence.”

“What is very disappointing to me as a Singaporean is that this is a government which as obviously used the COVID-19 situation as a crisis in order to win these elections, hoping to wipe out the oppositions.”

The lawyer then slammed the PAP for risking the safety and health of the Singaporean citizens by calling for an election just so that they can “retain power and wipe out the oppositions”. He stressed that the COVID-19 community cases have been on the rise, noting how schoolchildren and a teacher had already been infected.

Not just that, quoting how Mr Chan suggested it would also be a good chance to hold an election earlier last year due to the conflict with Malaysia, the PV chief noted how it was evident that the PAP had a tendency to use times of crisis to win elections.

He felt that the GE2020 was “disgraceful” as political parties were only given nine days to campaign and expressed the ridiculousness of the event that is meant to determine the nation’s fate for the coming five years.

“Our state of electioneering was disgraceful. We were given nine days, the shortest possible span in the democratic world.”

The PV chief also revealed that the Elections Department (ELD) called him every day, notifying him of “poster infringement” and urged him to remove his party’s posters. Not only that, the removal of posters had to be done within three hours and the party would be summoned if they failed to do so.

Mr Lim expressed that he was fed up, noting that all the PAP posters had infringed the regulations as well, and questioned if the ELD had also called PAP.

By reminding his viewers that “crisis equates fear”, he explained that by amplifying the fear in people, they would flee to safety and that translates to voting for PAP. He claimed that this is “fearmongering of the worst kind”.

Moving on, he pointed out how PAP had been recruiting civil servants to run for elections, and that the alternative parties have a diverse group of candidates from the private sector.

“We may not have the candidates who earn as much as the PAP. These are the people who are closer to your lives, who live in your areas, who send their children to the same schools that you send your children to.”

Mr Lim urged Singaporeans to consider voting for alternative parties because the candidates from these parties would be able to understand the people, and ultimately speak up for them in Parliament.

“These are the people who deserve to be your representatives in Parliament because they will speak up for you, they will understand your problems.”
