On Wednesday (8 July), the Singapore People’s Party (SPP) member Khan Osman Sulaiman took to his Facebook to voice his concerns over the People’s Action Party (PAP)’s decision to call for the General Election amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
In his post, Mr Osman, who is also the SPP’s candidate at Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, said that Singapore had managed to control the number of infected cases during Phase One of the country’s lockdown.
However, he noted that in order to accommodate the PAP’s decision to hold the election amid COVID-19 outbreak, the country’s restriction had to be eased during Phase Two.
Instead of caring for the people’s well-being, Mr Osman pointed out that before the election deadline of 21 April 2021, the PAP had insisted to call for an election or even “amend the constitution to allow for special situation”.
He went on to say that the community cases have been increasing over the last few days.
“If it worsens, and we move into lockdown phase 1 again, businesses will be affected tremendously. Economy will tank. The PAP will have to take full responsibility over it. No deflecting of blame as they have usually done so,” Mr Osman asserted.
He also highlighted that roughly S$91 billion will be spent for the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Let’s hope for the best and everything turns out well,” Mr Osman concluded.
The other three candidates running with Mr Osman at Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC are SPP’s party secretary-general Steve Chia, vice-chairman Williiamson Lee, and fellow party member Melvyn Chiu.
