In a moment of spontaneous sportsmanship and chivalry between political rivalry, Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chief Dr Chee Soon Juan and People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate Tharman Shanmugaratnam greeted each other with a fist bump.
The duo crossed paths at Bukit Batok on Sunday (5 July).
A photo of the iconic gesture between the two has been making waves across the Internet, winning the hearts of Singaporeans amid the increasing tension as GE2020 looms.
Earlier today (6 July), Dr Chee shared the photo on his Facebook to illustrate the true spirit of elections.
In his post, he said that he met Mr Tharman at Bukit Batok yesterday, adding that Mr Tharman – who is leading the PAP team in Jurong GRC – was there to campaign for fellow PAP candidate Murali Pillai.
“After this photo was taken, I spotted Mr Murali and went up to him and wished him the best,” Dr Chee added.
The SDP chief also noted that Grace Fu – PAP candidate for Yuhua SMC – was present at Bukit Batok the day before.
At the end of his post, Dr Chee remarked, “Elections should be a contest of ideas not personal attacks.”
