在周三(1日)的新传媒朝野政党电视辩论,民主党武吉巴督单选区候选人徐顺全,质问政府有意作一千万人口的规划,但随即被行动党荷兰-武吉知马候选人维文驳斥,指这是虚假声明。 至于东海岸集选区候选人王瑞杰则声称,他不曾说过要把人口增至1千万。政府也未有这个目标。而当前的趋势来看,到2030年可能人口还少过690万。 而民主党较后发文表示,成功从行动党那里取得保证,他们无意把人口增至一千万。 若检视新加坡统计局的数据,可以发现从1999年至2019年,短短20年期间,人口已增加多达174万4846人。等同每年平均增长8万7242人,除了2003年人口增长稍微放缓(当年遇上沙斯病毒疫情)。 尽管王瑞杰称2030年人口不会超过690万,不过若上述增长趋势持续,到2033年或许人口将超过690万人。
