The Workers’ Party (WP)’s Tan Chen Chen will be contesting against Sun Xueling of the People’s Action Party (PAP) in the Punggol West Single Member Constituency (SMC).
A trained quantity surveyor and contract administrator, Ms Tan is a graduate of Singapore Polytechnic and RMIT University with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Construction Management.
She has been an active member of WP in the Bedok Division of Aljunied GRC under previous WP secretary-general Low Thia Khiang. Ms Tan is a first-time candidate.
Ms Sun served as Senior Parliamentary Secretary for National Development and Home Affairs in the 13th Parliament.
Punggol West SMC was newly carved from Pasir Ris-Punggol Group Representation Constituency (GRC) this year.
Ms Sun was part of the winning team in Pasir Ris–Punggol GRC in the last general election in 2015 — helmed by former Deputy Prime Minister and Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean — alongside Teo Ser Luck, Janil Puthucheary, Zainal Sapari and Ng Chee Meng.
Hougang SMC, surrounded by Aljunied GRC, is another SMC that will see a WP candidate being fielded, as shipping lawyer Dennis Tan Lip Fong is slated to succeed two-term WP MP Png Eng Huat as a candidate.
He will be contesting against PAP’s Lee Hong Chuang.
In Aljunied GRC, Party secretary-general Pritam Singh will lead the team of WP MPs, comprising chair Sylvia Lim Swee Lian and central executive committee members Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap, tech startup co-founder Gerald Giam Yean Song and Spire Research and Consulting co-founder and CEO Leon Perera.
This year’s election marks the first time Mr Giam and Mr Perera — both former Non-Constituency Members of Parliament (NCMPs) — will be contesting in Aljunied GRC.
They will be standing against PAP’s Victor Lye Thiam Fatt, Alex Yeo Sheng Chye, Chan Hui Yuh, Chua Eng Leong and Shamsul Kamar.
WP nearly lost Aljunied GRC by a small margin of 1.9 per cent of votes against PAP in the 2015 general election.
While entrepreneur Yee Jenn Jong will stand again in Marine Parade GRC this year, the WP team will be seeing some new faces from the WP in its team this coming election, namely IT professional Nathaniel Koh Kim Kui, lawyer Muhammad Fadli Mohammed Fawzi and gig-economy worker Muhammad Azhar Abdul Latip.
WP’s team in Marine Parade GRC will be helmed by Senior Assistant Manager at the NUHS Research Office Ron Tan Jun Yen, who contested in Nee Soon GRC in 2015.
They will be going against a PAP team of past Parliament Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin, former Senior Minister Edwin Tong, Seah Kian Peng, former army colonel Mohd Fahmi Aliman, and former managing director of IHH Healthcare Tan See Leng.
A WP team led by lawyer He Ting Ru and comprising economics professor Jamus Jerome Lim Chee Wui, social worker and WP’s youngest candidate this year Raeesah Begum Farid Khan, and equity research analyst Louis Chua Kheng Wee will be contesting in Sengkang GRC this year.
They will be contesting against a PAP team led by National Trades Union Congress secretary-general and former Pasir-Ris Punggol GRC Ng Chee Meng.
The PAP lineup in Sengkang GRC will include former Senior Minister of State for Transport and Health Lam Pin Min, former Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Home Affairs and Health Amrin Amin, and lawyer Raymond Lye. Mr Lye is a first-time general election candidate.
In East Coast GRC, a WP team made of wealth advisory firm director Dylan Ng, Singapore Cancer Society deputy director Kenneth Foo Seck Guan, lawyer Terence Tan Li-Chern, former researcher Abdul Shariff Aboo Kassim and advertising executive Nicole Seah will be going against a PAP team led by former Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat, who previously held the Tampines GRC ward.
Mr Heng will be running against the East Coast GRC WP group alongside former Senior Minister of State for Defence and Foreign Affairs Maliki Osman, three-term backbencher Jessica Tan, former Infocomm Media Development Authority CEO Tan Kiat How, and one-term Fengshan MP Cheryl Chan.
Fengshan SMC has been incorporated into East Coast GRC for this election.
