A netizen has filed a police report against a “hardcore” People Action Party (PAP) supporter who allegedly issued a veiled threat to Facebook user Bryant Wong Hai Chew for exposing former PAP candidate Ivan Lim’s conduct and behaviour as a commanding officer (CO) in military service.

In Mr Wong’s Facebook post which was posted on Friday (26 June), one netizen who goes by the name Surya Kumar penned a comment last night (27 June), saying that Mr Wong had “accomplished” his mission which has contributed to the withdrawal of PAP’s candidate Ivan Lim from the upcoming General Election (GE).

He wrote, “I hope you are squeaky clean because… whilst I have no idea who you are… there is a(n) army of people who do. Good luck and check 6….warrant officer”.

With regards to that comment, many netizens were suggesting that the comment appears to be a veiled threat to Mr Wong, as they claimed that “check 6” is a slang for “watch your back”.

One netizen even pointed out that Mr Kumar is a “hardcore PAP supporter” who had “constantly attacked anti-PAP comments”.

Meanwhile, another netizen who goes by the name Kelvin Joshua, noted that he had already lodged a police report against Mr Kumar over his alleged threatening remark.

The brief of police report read, “One his post I found a rather threatening message left by the former chief Army Medical Officer Surya Kumar. The comment said ‘whilst I have no idea who you are, there is a army of people who do. Good luck and Check 6…warrant officer. In army lingo check 6 is to check your back. I do not know what he meant by this but I feel that Bryant was threaten.”

This is the police report that was uploaded by Mr Joshua.

Various allegations and criticism targeted at PAP candidate Ivan Lim over his character and moral ethics

On 24 June, almost immediately after the PAP announced one of its new candidates, Ivan Lim, who might be contesting in Jurong GRC, social media was rife with criticisms of his character and moral ethics.

These past experiences of Mr Lim were mostly shared by his colleagues at Keppel Offshore and Marine (KOM), fellow army comrades, but included various allegations and criticisms from polytechnic school mates and neighbours.

Mr Wong, who is Mr Lim’s commanding officer, had shared a story on his Facebook page detailing an encounter he had with Mr Lim when they were both in the NS Combat Engineering Battalion.

In his story, Mr Wong alleged that during an outfield exercise in Khatib Bongsu back in 2013, Mr Lim spoke “using a condescending voice” to tell others not to step into the air-conditioned tent he was using.

“His action and speech were simply that of an elitist,” wrote Mr Wong.

He then concluded, “So now he is going into politics to represent the ordinary folks in Parliament. With his character and personality – will he?”

Following the widespread allegations and criticisms, a petition on Change.org calling for the removal of Ivan Lim from the GE was created on Friday (26 June).

The petition called on the public to sign if “they do not want him to be a member of parliament, regardless of whether he is in PAP or an (alternative) party.”

It has garnered over 20,000 signatures at the time of writing.

Ivan Lim drops out of the upcoming GE

Following this criticism making round on social media, it was reported yesterday that Ivan Lim will be dropping out of the upcoming GE as a candidate and the party has accepted the resignation.

According to the media, Mr Lim had written a letter to the party, where he pointed that he maintains a clear conscience but had decided to withdraw from the election so as not to disrupt PAP’s election campaign.

The party expressed regret over his decision but respect the reasons behind his withdrawal.
