Responding to a media question yesterday (26 Jun) on the prospect of Lee Hsien Loong’s estranged brother, Mr Lee Hsien Yang, contesting in Tanjong Pagar GRC in the upcoming GE, Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing said he welcomes anyone to come and stand against him.

Chan said, “For Tanjong Pagar, we welcome other people to come and stand. It offers Tanjong Pagar residents a choice. We are not particularly focused on who is coming or going.”

Chan currently leads the People’s Action Party (PAP) team at Tanjong Pagar GRC and is expected to continue to contest there. He was speaking to reporters in a virtual press conference at PAP headquarters in New Upper Changi Road yesterday.

PAP’s concern, said Chan, is the same today as it has been for many years – to take care of residents and Singapore.

“From the PAP team’s perspective, we are focused on serving our residents day in, day out, and we have been doing that for the last many years,” Chan said. “I am sure Tanjong Pagar residents know us well, they know what we stand for, they know how we care for them.”

“And I look forward to working closely with the residents to continue solving their issues, taking care of them, and also collectively taking care of Singapore,” he added.

Hsien Yang has joined the alternative party, the Progress Singapore Party (PSP), which announced his membership on Wed (24 Jun) at a breakfast meeting in Tiong Bahru Food Centre located in Tanjong Pagar GRC.

Tanjong Pagar GRC is a PAP stronghold and used to be led by founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew –  Hsien Loong and Hsien Yang’s father.

Hsien Yang has not revealed if he would stand in the coming GE and if so, where he would contest in. His only reply to reporters from mainstream media: “When I am ready to disclose that, you will find out.”
