Residents of Aljunied and Hougang “can see for themselves” what the Workers’ Party (WP) have done for the said constituencies and decide from there in terms of their votes this coming general election, said Party secretary-general Pritam Singh.
Responding to questions from the media on whether the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council court case may impact WP’s chances of retaining its stronghold group representative constituency (GRC) this GE, Mr Singh in a virtual press conference on Friday (26 June) echoed some of former Party secretary-general Low Thia Khiang’s recent statements.
“[F]rom 2015 through the course of this term, the performance of the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council has not had any issues come up of concern, or [is a matter] that residents should be worried about,” he said.
“If you look at the financial performance, for example, I mean, it is comparable to any other GRC in Singapore,” added Mr Singh.
More importantly, he said, it is more crucial to reevaluate one’s own performance as town councillors, and based on his observation, everyone from residents to AHTC’s contractors “have done well” for the ward.
Mr Singh also confirmed that party chair Sylvia Lim, as well as central executive committee members Faisal Manap, Leon Perera and Gerald Giam will continue to contest in Aljunied GRC in the coming election.
Responding to a question from Lianhe Zaobao on when WP’s manifesto will be released, Ms Lim said that WP intends to do so this weekend.
She did not, however, reveal further details as the Party “does not want to take the sting” from the upcoming announcement of the manifesto.
