The Chairman of Singapore People’s Party (SPP) Jose Raymond took to his Facebook on Thursday (26 June), expressing his readiness to contest in the upcoming General Election (GE).

Sharing an article published by Business Times, Mr Raymond was quoted saying, “The possibility of a GE has been on the cards for some time.”

“In terms of our outreach in Potong Pasir, work began three years ago and we are looking forward to the contest, in an area we hold close to our hearts,” he added.

As reported by Business Times, the alternatives parties said that they are geared up for battle following the announcement of Singapore’s next GE.

It was noted that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has called for the next GE in a national broadcast on Tuesday (23 June) following the dissolution of Parliament by President Halimah Yacob on the advice of PM Lee.

On the same day evening, Mr Raymond posted on his Facebook, saying that this election is important for building a better Singapore by ensuring the voice of people is always heard, adding that Singaporeans must unshackle themselves from policies and ideas of the past in order to build a better nation.

“This elections is about ensuring your voice is always heard and is never drowned out by anyone who wields an enormous amount of power. This elections is about beginning to build a better Singapore, as we unshackle ourselves from policies and ideas of the past. This elections is about the taking bold steps, without fear and with hope in your hearts. This elections is about you.

“It always has to be about you, the kind of community you wish to live in, the kind of society you want to grow old in and the kind of Singapore we leave for your children’s future.”

The SPP had earlier announced the five candidates who will be participate in the upcoming GE.

Mr Raymond will be contesting at Potong Pasir SMC, while the other four candidates – Vice-Chairman Williiamson Lee, Secretary-General Steve Chia, as well as member Khan Osman Sulaiman and Melvyn Chiu – will be contesting at Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC.
