In a rather shocking move, Singaporeans First (SingFirst) announced today (25 June) that the party has dissolved, just two weeks before GE2020.

The party’s Secretary-General Tan Jee Say said in a Facebook post that SingFirst’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) decided to close down the political party.

In a statement, Mr Tan said, “Singapore needs a strong opposition to check the government and provide an alternative voice for the people. We believe a strong opposition is best achieved with consolidation.”

He added, “In this light, the Central Executive Committee of Singaporeans First has decided to dissolve the party.”

The party also stated that over the last few months, it had worked very hard with other opposition parties in order to offer better “unity and cooperation”.

“We abided by this principle by choosing to avoid 3-cornered fights, as seen in the 2015 General Election when we contested in Jurong and Tanjong Pagar GRCs. Since then, we have worked tirelessly to continue upholding the spirit of opposition unity,” Mr Tan said.

In fact, he noted that SingFirst even redirected some of its members to join other parties, adding that a number of its former members are now active in different political parties.

As such, with this dissolution, the party’s CEC encouraged its current members to sign up with a new party that reflect their values and belief. It also thanked Singaporeans for all their support throughout the years.

“It has been an honour and privilege to advocate on Singaporeans’ behalf and we hope to continue to have your support wherever we go,” Mr Tan concluded.
