The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chief Dr Chee Soon Juan took to his Facebook on Tuesday (23 June) to ask the people of Bukit Batok SMC to support him in the upcoming general election (GE).

Given that the Writ of Election was released on Tuesday, he said it’s “crunch time” now and hopes that the people in the mentioned ward will continue to support him as they have over the years.

“My friends, the Writ of Election has been issued. It’s crunch time. I’ll be doing battle again at Bukit Batok and I hope that you will give me your support as you have all these years,” he wrote.

On Tuesday, President Halimah Yacob dissolved the Parliament and issued the Writ of Election on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Singapore’s 14th GE will be held on 10 July and the Nomination Day is set on 30 June.

Just last weekend (21 June), Dr Chee confirmed during his walkabout at Bukit Batok West Shopping centre that he will be contesting in Bukit Batok SMC in next month’s GE.

Dr Chee last contested in Bukit Batok SMC in the 2016 by-election – which took place following the sudden resignation of People’s Action Party (PAP) Member of Parliament (MP) David Ong – where he lost to the PAP’s Murali Pillai, who won with 61.21 per cent of the vote.

In Dr Chee’s post, he also appealed to the public to purchase his books, which are available on SDP’s website.

The party’s chief said that the sales from the books will go into putting food on his table as well as to fund his election campaign.

“I’ve put in much thought and research into writing them [books] in the hope that it will contribute to the moulding of our nation. Please consider buying a copy if you haven’t already. Need all the help I can get,” Dr Chee noted.

If that’s not all, he also urged volunteers to “sign up as campaign helpers and polling agents for all the constituencies we’re contesting in”, adding that volunteers at Bukit Batok will receive a T-shirt of the party.

Besides Dr Chee’s announcement of contesting at Bukit Batok SMC, the party has not made official confirmation on any other candidates and where they will be contesting. However, its walkabouts since Friday (19 June) strongly indicated which constituencies it will contest as well as who will be the representative, the Straits Times reported.

The party sent teams of four of the five constituencies it contested in 2015 – Bukit Batok SMC, Yuhua SMC, Holland-Bukit Timah GRC and Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC.

It is also looking to hold another walkabout in the fifth constituency, Bukit Panjang SMC, in the next few days.
