The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) has welcomed Lee Hsien Yang into the fold, according to an announcement by the party on Wednesday (24 June). Mr Lee is the estranged brother of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, with whom he has been embroiled in a dispute over their father’s house on Oxley Road.
The announcement comes just a day after parliament was dissolved and the writ of election issued, with Nomination Day and Polling Day set for 30 June and 10 July respectively.
PSP Secretary-General Dr Tan Cheng Bock made the announcement earlier this morning at Tiong Bahru Market as he handed Mr Lee, who was wearing the party’s red and white t-shirt, a party membership card.
The Tiong Bahru Market is located in the Tanjong Pagar GRC which is where Mr Lee’s father, founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, was helmed as a member of parliament until his passing in 2015. This is one of the eight wards that Dr Tan confirmed PSP will be contesting this GE2020.
During the small event, Dr Tan noted that Mr Lee had already been a member of the party “for quite some time” but the COVID-19 pandemic prevented them from holding a proper membership presentation ceremony until now.
He said, “This morning, I have a great pleasure in giving this Progress Singapore Party membership card to Lee Hsien Yang, who joined us quite some time ago.”
It remains uncertain if Mr Lee will be contesting in the upcoming election.
