Lee Hsien Yang, who has joined the Progress Singapore Party (PSP) recounted a heartfelt connection with party assistant secretary-general Leong Mun Wai on the way to the breakfast announcement at Tiong Bahru Market this morning when Mr Lee was presented with a PSP membership card.

The market is located in the Tanjong Pagar GRC which is where Mr Lee’s father, founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, was helmed as a member of parliament until his passing in 2015. It is also where Mr Leong’s father was a dry goods hawker in the 1980s.

Mr Lee shared in a Facebook post today (24 June), “I hitched a ride with Mun Wai to breakfast this morning, and he recounted how his father used to run a stall there and had to push a heavy laden cart from Chinatown to Tiong Bahru market and back in order to sell dried goods. He didn’t want his sons to help him, and told them to go and study instead.”

“The story had a happy ending,” he added.

Mr Lee shared a couple of photos that Mr Leong had posted on his own Facebook page. One was Mr Lee and Mr Leong at the Tiong Bahru Market this morning, the other is a photo of Mr Leong’s father.

In his post, Mr Leong said, “One of the most unforgettable breakfast at Tiong Bahru Market with Lee Hsien Yang today when Dr Tan Cheng Bock announced his joining of the Progress Singapore Party (PSP).”

“Incidentally my late father was a dry goods hawker at the wet market until the 1980s. The right photo was taken with him at a pond in front of the ancestral house in Guangdong, China in 1993.”

Earlier today, PSP secretary general Dr Tan Cheng Bock announced at the Tiong Bahru Market that Mr Lee, who is the estranged younger brother of current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and son of founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, had joined the party.

The announcement comes just a day after the dissolution of parliament and the issuance of the Writ of Election. Nomination Day will be on 30 June while Polling Day is set for 10 July.
