Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) took to its official Facebook page today (23 June) to call for more donations, campaign workers and poling agents for the upcoming general election (GE).

In a video posted on Facebook, the party’s new candidate, 35-year-old marketing and communications professional, Min Cheong said that the party is ready for the next GE although it thinks that it is “not the time” to hold an election in the midst of a serious pandemic.

“We still have to gear up for the GE when the government should have put that aside and remained focused on the well-being of Singaporeans, amidst an outbreak that has yet to be properly contained, an uncertain economic climate and lives and livelihood at stake. This is just not the time,” she said.

She added, “But we are ready because this elections is about you and about improving our lives”.

If that’s not all, another new candidate of the party, entrepreneur Alfred Tan, highlighted in the video some of the party’s beliefs, which include “justice and freedom in giving everyone the opportunity to succeed” as well as “believe in giving a voice to the voiceless and powering the powerless”.

If that’s not all, another belief of SDP is to build a “society where people can be for-profit, rights before riches and wisdom before wealth”, Ms Cheong said.

As such, she pointed out that if any members of the public resonate with SDP’s beliefs, then the party would like them to donate for the GE campaign at its website.

“We also need more campaign workers and polling agents. So we hope you’ll join us as volunteers. See you on the campaign trail,” she concluded.

SDP’s chief Chee Soon Juan confirmed on Sunday (21 June) during a walkabout that he will be contesting at Bukit Batok Single Member Constituency (SMC) in the upcoming GE.

Although the party has not made official confirmation on any other candidates, its walkabouts since Friday (19 June) strongly indicated which constituencies it will contest as well as who will be the representative, the Straits Times reported.

The party sent teams of four of the five constituencies it contested in 2015 – Bukit Batok SMC, Yuhua SMC, Holland-Bukit Timah GRC and Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC.

It is also looking to hold another walkabout in the fifth constituency,  Bukit Panjang SMC, in the next few days.
