Last night (22 June), the Straits Times published an article which alleges that People’s Voice (PV) founder Lim Tean is facing bankruptcy, indirectly implying that the lawyer would not be eligible for the coming General Elections (GE).

In the news article, it is reported that Mr Lim is facing two pending bankruptcy claims with a total of S$1.45 million. The Straits Times claimed that they had reached out to him but he did not respond.

According to the report, one of the bankruptcy applications was filed by DBS Bank in October 2019 over a debt of S$549,378. The other application was filed by Sing Wing (I & E), a trading company, in May 2020 over a debt of S$905,000.

The news article also included that the PV will be contesting Jurong GRC in the GE and noted “The Singapore Constitution disqualifies an undischarged bankrupt from being a Member of Parliament”.

Following the report by the national paper, Mr Lim took this matter to his Facebook, slamming how mainstream media would attempt to smear the “Opposition Politicians” when GE is around the corner.

He clarified that he did not receive any calls or queries from the Straits Times despite the paper claiming they did. The PV chief believed that this was one of the tactics to steer people’s attention away from important affairs revolving the GE.

Seeing how he was being painted the picture of bankruptcy, Mr Lim assured that he is “not going to be bankrupted” and that the sum of money he was said to have owed was “total rubbish”.

On the contrary, he mentioned that PV had gained more support over the past two months and PV is a bigger party now. Apart from being confident about the party’s increasing support, he added that PV presents the “biggest threat” to the “elites” because they represent ordinary Singaporeans.

“It will be abundantly clear to observers that Peoples Voice presents the biggest threat to the establishment and the elites because we represent the voices of the ordinary hardworking people of Singapore, who feel abandoned by the very people who claim to represent them. Our support has surged and so many have joined us during the lockdown. We are a much bigger party than we were 2 months ago.”

The lawyer believed that more people are attracted to the ideals PV stands for and that the “establishment and elites” who betrayed Singapore’s working class intended to cripple him by banning him at the starting point of GE.

“These people who have betrayed the aspirations of the working class, who are increasingly attracted to the ideals Peoples Voice stand for, hope that I will be crippled and will not be at the starting gate for the General Elections.”

Ending his post, he pledged to lead his party into the elections and would speak up ordinary Singaporeans who believed in a “better future” for themselves and the future generations.

“Have no fear! I will be there leading the brave warriors of Peoples Voice into battle and we will be the ones having the last laugh at these people who wish me and Peoples Voice ill! And we won’t be hunkering down either. We will be pounding them until all their incompetence are revealed to the Singaporean voters!
And of course I will always speak up for ordinary Singaporeans who aspire to a better future for themselves and their Next Generation!”
