Progress Singapore Party (PSP) member Taufik Supan took to his Facebook earlier today (22 June) to share how he came to join the Party.
Recalling his dilemma the weekend when he was supposed to attend PSP’s Welcome Tea Party, Mr Taufik described the uncertainty of leaving home for the said event. He doubted his decision to sign up as a member, and wondered if it was a “hasty mistake”.
“It was a weekend; the day I was supposed to collect my membership card during the Welcome Tea Party.
I was contemplating if I should go or I should just accept that my sign up was just a hasty mistake. Deep inside, my heart was telling me to go and do the right thing. Should I deny this opportunity to make a difference?”
With much difficulty to decide if he wanted to make a difference by joining PSP, he ended up asking his wife for her opinion.
As it turns out, Mr Taufik got a scolding from his wife for being indecisive. He then had an epiphany when she asked him if joining the Party was what he really wanted, as she offered her support and blessings.
“I turned to my wife and asked her opinion. I was scolded left, right, and center. At the end of the scolding, she asked me if this is what I wanted. It was the most euphonic moment when she said, “Yes” and she will give me her support and blessings.”
Fast forward to this day, Mr Taufik is one of the six candidates introduced by the PSP last Thursday (18 June) who will be participating in the upcoming General Election.
In his post, he explained that even though he was leading an “OK” and comfortable life before this, he still wanted to choose this path.
“I am being questioned as to why I am doing this. I am leading an “OK” life. I am able to build myself a nice home for my family and provide for them. Life is not that bad for me, they said.”
This was meant as a response to the people who questioned his intentions for taking up the responsibility in the Party.
Despite those who questioned him had agreed that “many things are not right”, the 40-year-old PSP member recalled that they told him that he should not be the one in charge because “there is nothing he could do about it”.
When he was asked what difference he would be able to make by joining the Party, he held on to the belief that all PSP members came together with a common purpose, adding that it does “make a huge difference”.
Mr Taufik also asserted that PSP provides “the most meaningful platform” for him to strive to make a difference.
At the end of his post, he urged Singaporeans to not “waste this opportunity” to make a difference, adding that everyone should “be brave” and “do the right thing”.
