Former Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) and Workers’ Party (WP) politician Yee Jenn Jong took to his Facebook on Saturday (20 June) to share that he was back in WP gears – after three months – to carry out food distribution in Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency (GRC), and perform campaign engagement after that.

Mr Yee expressed his excitement and energy to finally be out on his feet upon completing five days of stay-home medical leave.

He noted that a Good Samaritan donated a sum of money for his team to acquire items for the residents, adding that the donor found out about the daily cooked food distribution after reading an earlier post of his about the initiative – which is now executed at three locations in the Marine Parade GRC.

After reading about how one of the local vegetable farms is about to close for good this month, and later finding out about the excess of eggs in Singapore, Mr Yee and his team decided to do their part to ease the burden of the local farms.

“This morning, the recipients were surprised with eggs,” he wrote in his post, adding that the eggs are “Not Polish but ‘Singlish’ eggs”.

Mr Yee’s joking remark on the eggs stemmed from Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing’s announcement on 5 June saying that Singapore has received the first shipment of eggs from Poland. The eggs were imported as an attempt to mitigate the country’s supply disruptions and price fluctuations caused by COVID-19 pandemic.

Besides talking about eggs, Mr Yee also spoke about Bak Chang (glutinous rice dumpling).

“My regular volunteer at Eunos made me Bak Chang, since the Dumpling festival is just round the corner – that became my yummy lunch later,” he said.

Mr Yee went on to describe the events that transpired when his team visited a market next to one of the distribution points.

“One resident immediately came to me and show me his photos and screensaver on his phone – all WP stuff,” he wrote.

“Another came to us with yogurt drinks, still cold, which he had specially bought from the supermarket nearby for us when he saw us,” Mr Yee.

He also mentioned the kind gesture of another resident who gave some kueh to one of his team members, saying that he needed the energy for the campaign.

“Glad to meet many residents who remember me from GE2011 and GE2015. I had visited many of them at their homes. This year, it will be hard to make that extensive a coverage given the ongoing pandemic,” Mr Yee remarked.

He ended his post by thanking everyone for the warm welcome on a cold rainy day.
