The Workers’ Party (WP) chief Pritam Singh shared a compiled series of stories featuring his Party members’ contributions to the community during the circuit breaker period.
In his Facebook post yesterday (3 June), Mr Singh recalled how former Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) Gerald Giam stepped up in Low Thia Khiang’s place to deliver food to the residents in need in the ward of Aljunied GRC.
Mr Giam had supported Mr Low’s duty due to the latter’s injury from a fall at home earlier in April.
As Mr Singh called Mr Low to update on his status three days ago, the Aljunied GRC MP and former Secretary-General of WP revealed that he is currently recuperating at home. He also thanked everyone for their concerns.
The other WP’s MPs expressed their support to Mr Low, assuring him to focus on his recovery at the moment and refrain from worrying about anything else.
Another figure Mr Singh noted in his post was Frieda Chan Sio Phing, who arranged free consultations with a mental health professional for Singaporeans who are mentally stressed.
As a social worker, Ms Chan used the social enterprise she had set up to help those who are emotionally affected by the extension of the circuit breaker back in April.
She was concerned that this extension would result in more cases of depression and anxiety in the community.
“With the extension of the circuit breaker in April, Frieda was concerned about the prospect of more depression/anxiety related cases in the community. Through her social entreprise, she arranged for a free consultation with a mental health professional/counsellor to stressed/emotionally affected Singaporeans with advice and recommendations for follow-up support.”
Other than Mr Giam and Ms Chan, Mr Singh named Jeraldine Phneah as another WP member who contributed to the community during the circuit breaker period.
Ms Phneah, a WP’s Youth Wing member, had taken into account that the students who are graduating in 2020 will be “entering a gloomy market” where job opportunities would be impacted.
Noting that the graduates will have a hard time looking for jobs and that millennials are also losing jobs, she helped review their LinkedIn and resume profiles.
Mr Singh revealed that Ms Phneah specifically helped those with less than three years of working experience, adding that even after all her slots were taken up, she utilised her time to work with the graduates who did not manage to book a slot.
“Knowing that some millenials would lose jobs or see job offers rescinded she set aside some time over a long weekend to review LinkedIn & Resume profiles targeting fresh graduates or those with < 3 years working experience. All her slots were taken up and for those who could not get a slot, she put aside time to help them remotely.”
In line with WP’s 60th-anniversary theme back in 2017 – “Walking with Singapore” – Mr Singh concluded his Facebook post by expressing how his Party is honoured to “walk with Singapore” amid such difficult times.
