Low-cost airline Scoot had deployed nearly 400 crew to support other industries, said the company on Thursday (4 June), adding that more than 100 of its cabin crew have taken on temporary employment with ams Sensors Singapore.

Scoot and ams Sensors Singapore – manufacturer of sensor solutions – said in a joint statement on Thursday that over 100 cabin crew have taken on its temporary employment in a duration of at least three months starting in May this year, as reported by The Business Times.

The companies believe that it will help to supplement the income of the crew – who have seen their flying hours being “greatly reduced” due to the COVID-19 pandemic – and at the same time, they will be able to gain new knowledge and soft skills.

“They also allow Scoot to retain its frontline talent through this downturn,” the companies asserted.

The cabin crew were assessed based on their communication skills, attention to detail, and goal-driven attributes in an interview process with ams Sensors Singapore, followed by a period of on-the-job-training.

“Despite coming from another industry, their robust service background makes them adaptable to new situations. We have also found them to be very meticulous, solution-oriented, and goal-driven,” said Soh Lip Leong, General Manager and Senior Vice-President of front-end and back-end operations and global test at ams Sensors Singapore.

This would be Scoot’s first cross-industry partnership with a private-sector organisation, which comes after more employees in the aviation industry taking on alternative jobs as the industry has been hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, the airline’s cabin crew and pilots were also enrolled in a training programme for upskilling and career development as most of its network had been temporarily suspended amid the outbreak.

About 1,900 crew attended a home-based virtual learning course that was hosted in collaboration between the company and NTUC LearningHub.
