Feeling bored because of working from home and there’s nothing much to do? Perhaps you’d be interested to learn how to protect yourself from unforeseen danger while you’re at home.

Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Home Affairs Sun Xueling is inviting Singaporeans to “Get Active” in the comfort of their own homes by learning self-defence techniques.

On her Facebook post yesterday (2 June), Ms Sun expressed her interest to learn self-defence techniques and had decided to learn them from Singapore Police Force Instructor Tan Kien Hwee.

She shared a poster of the virtual event, announcing that the class will be aired tonight (3 June) from 8pm to 9pm on Get Active TV and Facebook.

Due to COVID-19 safety precautions, Ms Sun stated that both she and Mr Tan have been practising on wooden dummies to avoid direct contact with each other.

Ever wondered what peaked her interest in learning self-defence?

Ms Sun explained that she had been concerned about her personal safety as she used to spend a lot of her time running around “undeveloped places” overseas before she joined politics.

“I spent a large part of my private sector career before I joined politics running around rather undeveloped places overseas and I had always been worried about personal safety.”

Apart from acknowledging that crime rates in Singapore are low, she attempted to assure the public that her intention of inviting Singaporeans to learn self-defence was not meant to imply that there’s “something to worry about” in Singapore.

Nonetheless, Ms Sun believed that Singaporeans should try to “equip ourselves” and be “self-reliant” despite the low crime rates.

“Crime rates are low in Singapore and I am by no means asking people to learn self defence techniques because there is something to worry about in Singapore, but rather I think we should always try to equip ourselves and be self-reliant.”

With the intention to enrol people into watching the segment, she revealed that GetActive SG edited her two-hour of hard work into a five-minute video that will be aired tonight.

“GetActive SG has put together my two hours of sweat and fumbling into a five minutes video and they are airing it tmr, weds 3 June 8-9pm via Get Active TV and facebook.”

She went on to say that she practised her self-defence techniques on her husband after she got home, and she received “not bad” as feedback.

“Don’t laugh, I tried my best (hiyah!) and I practiced it on my husband after I got home ???? He says not bad….so I think there is some punch to it ????”
