Yesterday, I was listening to Radio 93.8. Brigadier General Frederick Choo, the chairman of the National Day Parade (NDP) Executive Committee was speaking to Arnold and Yasmin about this year’s national day parade.
Singaporeans are promised wonderful fireworks that can be seen throughout the island because it will be shot so high that everyone can see it from their homes. If I have my way, I would ban fireworks. Fireworks terrify birds, insects and animals in the wild. It is environmentally harmful.

Singaporeans are also promised a great display of our fighter jets. Honestly, I really don’t look forward to roaring planes over my estate. They pollute our sky which is now blue and clear.
But what was most scary for me was the Brigadier General’s claim that “NDP is Singapore”.
How can this be? How can our army personnel speak in this way? Was he implying that the army is Singapore and Singaporeans are nothing?
The NDP is certainly not Singapore. I don’t watch the NDP on television or deliberately read about it in the newspapers. I won’t miss the parade this year or in the years to come. But that does not make me less interested in what is happening in Singapore?
Singapore is definitely not the NDP. Singapore belongs to Singaporeans and Singapore will still exist with or without the NDP. We don’t need to imitate the regimes of North Korea or Russia to show off our military might every year.
The wise thing to do this year is to save the money to be spent on the NDP and use it to help small businesses and the people who have lost their jobs. When a country is going through a crisis, the government should spend wisely.
Singaporeans I am sure will not miss the NDP or the NDP fun packs which incidentally is a total waste of good money. Only the military will miss their fun day.
