PV chief Lim Tean assures there is opposition unity in S’pore, saying multiple opposition parties in Parliament could form a “more robust and effective engine” than current “effete Parliament”

On Friday (15 May), People’s Voice Party (PVP) chief Lim Tean took to his Facebook in a roughly seven-minute video, saying that there is “unity” among the opposition parties, which contribute a more “vibrant and invigorating” in the Singapore’s opposition landscape at this present time.
In the video, Mr Lim countered that the supporters and “internet brigade” of the ruling government – People Action Party (PAP) – who suggested there is disunity in the opposition is a “complete fallacy” as the supporters are always “trying to sow doubt and discord” in the minds of the voters.
He noted that the number and abilities of opposition parties grow and expand owing to more and more people demanding political changes in the nation while reaching out to opposition parties to find a narrative that is total opposite of what the Government has offered and “which has failed the people miserably”.
“Today the opposition landscape cannot be more vibrant, it cannot be more invigorating,” Mr Lim asserted.
Noting the core message of its party – Putting People First, Mr Lim then pointed out that the two other opposition parties, which is Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) and Progress Singapore Party (PSP) have also included the values of this message – that the Government must take care of people first – in their own campaign message.
“So, the opposition are united behind the single message of Putting People First. It is a message that the PAP could never come out with, or even conceive of,” he remarked.
He suggested that the ideology of the ruling government is about putting “their own people first”, including those “chosen business leaders in the top positions” as these people “will create wealth that will trickle down to the society”.
Then he added, “But we know that this trickling down has never happened. The rich have become richer, the middle class has become squeezed and the poor have become poorer.”
Mr Lim also said that many of the opposition parties shared the same “fundamental values and principles” when speaking about the current issues.
Among of these include returning CPF at the age of 55, imposing zero GST on basic living goods, and say no to a 10 million population.
Touching on the General Election, Mr Lim opined that the public backlash against the idea of holding election during the COVID-19 pandemic was the reason of the Government to climb down from the decision of calling early election.
He thanked the online netizens for daringly and continuously voicing out their opinion in various social media platforms.
“It was netizens who speak out, who hold the Government to account with their unified voice and it is them who will create a better and fairer Singapore,” he stressed.
For the upcoming GE, the voters have opportunity to support their own party, said Mr Lim while highlighting the importance of multiple voice in Parliament.
“A Parliament containing the voices of the multiple opposition parties will be a far more robust and effective engine than this effete Parliament what we currently have now, where there is hardly any robust debate,” said the PV chief.
Mr Lim ended his video by expressing that he can “absolutely envisage working very well” with the opposition parties in Parliament.
“Together Singapore will leap forward again with great ideas and issues pushed through and all the while Putting People First.”
