Facebook-owned WhatsApp may soon be able to host video calls with up to 50 people by using a shortcut to Facebook’s Messenger Rooms. With this new feature, WhatsApp will emerge as a new alternative for video conferencing tools such as Zoom, Skype, and Google Meet.
The WhatsApp feature tracking site WABetainfo uncovered the messaging application’s upcoming feature on 8 May. It announced that the WhatsApp development team is working on a Messenger Rooms shortcut for WhatsApp Web, noting that it is currently in Beta mode.
Earlier on 24 April, Facebook announced its new video call features including Messenger Rooms, which allows users to host group video calls of up to 50 people with no time limit.
According to WABetainfo, WhatsApp is currently working on to add Messenger Rooms Shortcut in the 2.2019.6 Web update. The new shortcut will redirect users to the newly released Facebook Messenger Rooms, where users can create a room and invite other users to join the video conference. Users can also create rooms directly from WhatsApp.
WABetainfo also showed a few photos to explain Messenger Rooms Shortcut in WhatsApp Web beta.
WhatsApp will show an introduction of the feature when users click on the Messenger Rooms Shortcut. Users then click the “continue in messenger” to start the video call.
Users can also find another shortcut to create a room on the main menu in WhatsApp Web.
If users click to create a room, WhatsApp will ask if they want to be redirected to Messenger and start a video call.
On top of that, users’ participants do not need to have Facebook or WhatsApp accounts to join the video call as only the primary user is required to send an invite link to the other participants to join.
Meanwhile, WABetainfo stated that the feature is yet to be available as it is still under development. At the moment, there is no confirmed date of when the new feature will be released on WhatsApp, but WABetainfo assured that it will be available in the future for iOS, Android, and WhatsApp Web.
