In order to help cab drivers earn extra income during this difficult times caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, taxi giant ComfortDelGro has now expanded its wings by allowing its taxis to be used to deliver food.
From today (29 April), F&B outlets islandwide can sign up for the company’s delivery service, named ComfortDelivery, and enjoy “immediate access to a fleet of 10,000 taxis” for food deliveries.
The transport operator announced that the delivery service will be in operation daily from 9am to 10pm. As for the delivery charges, it will be calculated based on the distance, with a starting price of S$6.50. If an F&B outlet decides to book a taxi for two drop-offs in a single booking, then the shop is entitled to a discounted rate starting at S$8.50.
According to a news release by ComfortDelGro, this new service was introduced in order to help taxi drivers manage through this pandemic, especially during the “circuit breaker” period.
It added that the fees collected will be channelled directly to the drivers, and no additional charges will be imposed on the cabbies or the F&B outlets until the end of the circuit breaker period.
“There will be no fee imposed on either the cabbies or the F&B outlets during the circuit breaker period, which ends on June 1, 2020,” the company noted, however The Straits Times said that there might be a small “platform fee” after 1 June.
As for how taxi drivers will be chosen to deliver the food, they will have to bid for the delivery jobs through the ComfortDelivery Driver app. Drivers will also get payment from the F&B outlets upon collection via PayNow or cash.
By using the app, F&B outlets can also monitor the location of the taxi and the delivery times of items.
However, for F&B businesses that have more than one outlet, they will have to create separate accounts for each pick-up location. Almost 20 orders of up to three different destination per order can be placed at any one time.
ComfortDelGro revealed that its drivers will receive training on how to use the app, adding that they will still have to follow the safe distancing measures placed by the Singapore Food Association, such as utilising a contactless delivery process.
“With ComfortDelivery, we want to give all F&B businesses access to fast, reliable and affordable delivery service that benefits people who ask for the food to be delivered to them,” said ComfortDelGro Taxi chief executive Ang Wei Neng.
“In the process, our cabbies can also earn some extra income during these very challenging times.”
Apart from the food delivery service, the taxi giant has also set up other measures to help ease the burden of its drivers during the unprecedented COVID-19 outbreak. Some of the measures introduced include waivers on rental, grocery deliveries and a pilot programme with food delivery service Foodpanda.
