The Ministry of Health (MOH) has reported the country’s 12th COVID-19 death yesterday (22 April) as the total number of cases surged past the 10,000 mark.
The 84-year old Singaporean woman passed away from complications due to the virus on Tuesday night. She had been confirmed to have COVID-19 infection on 2 April, as announced by MOH in their daily update on 3 April. At the time her case was announced, it was unlinked.
The woman was admitted to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. They have reached out to the family and is extending assistance to them, said MOH in its statement.
In that same update, MOH said that of the 1,016 new cases on Wednesday, 17 were community cases. The average number of new cases in the community has decreased from an average of 36 cases a day the previous week to an average of 25 cases per day in the past week. The number of unlinked cases in the community has decreased from 21 to 17 cases on average per day.
Of the new cases, 32 were work permit holders residing outside of dormitories. Cases in this particular group continues to increase from an average of 14 to 30 cases per day in the past week compared to the previous week.
The majority of the new cases were work permit holders residing in dormitories—967 cases— which MOH notes is picking up because of extensive testing. The ministry explained that many of these cases have a mild illness and are being monitored in community isolation facilities or hospitals. None are in intensive care units.
MOH also said that 73 per cent of the new cases are linked to new clusters.
The country currently records the highest number of cases in Southeast Asia with a total of 10,141 cases as of 22 April 2020.
