Workers’ Party Non-Constituency MP – Assoc Prof Daniel Goh Pei Siong

Associate Professor Daniel Goh Pei Siong, Workers’ Party (WP)’s Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) will not be contesting in the upcoming Singapore General Election due to health reasons.
According to WP’s press statement, Assoc Prof Goh, 47, shared with the party some months ago that his health had been falling and since then, he has been under medication for a health condition
He has stepped down from his current appointments in the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) to focus on his rehabilitation, but remains as an ordinary member of the CEC.
Assoc Prof Goh has also stepped down as a town councillor of the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council some months back. All his said responsibilities have been assigned to other individuals, shared the party.
He will continue to fulfil his duties as a NCMP in this term of Parliament.
According to his request, he will not participate in the upcoming General Elections.
Assoc Prof Goh, a sociology professor at the National University of Singapore, contested for the first time at the General Election in the East Coast GRC. His team consisted of Mr Leon Perera, Mr Gerald Giam and Mr Mohamed Fairoz Shariff and won 39.27 per cent of the votes casted.
He was officially declared the candidate elected as the 3rd Non-constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) by the Returning Officer from the Elections Department (ELD) on 4 February 2016. Dr Goh had been nominated by his party, Workers’ Party (WP) to take over the NCMP seat after Ms Lee Li Lian declined to take up the position.
The then-NCMP scheme guarantees up to nine opposition candidates to enter the parliament as NCMPs. As the General Election 2015 had six opposition Members of Parliament (MPs), the top three losers in the election were given to take up seats in the parliament as NCMPs. The scheme has been updated to guarantee up to twelve candidates after the last GE.
