Indonesia’s West Java and Banten provinces will soon impose a large-scale social distancing-or pembatasan sosial berskala besar (PSBB) on Wednesday (15 April), aimed at containing the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
This follows the move of the country’s capital city, Jakarta, which first enacted PSBB last Friday (10 April).
West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil last Wednesday proposed a PSBB status for Bogor City, Bogor District, Bekasi District, Bekasi City, and Depok City.
The former Bandung mayor also stressed that West Java’s policy to enforce social restriction must be in line with that of Jakarta, given that 70 percent of COVID-19 cases are in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) area.
Kamil. elaborated that the West Java administration will distribute social aid from both central and regional governments.
Even both newcomers living in West Java and unregistered local residents — those who are not included in the provincial administration’s Social Welfare Integrated Data or data terpadu kesejahteraan social (DTKS) –living under the poverty line will receive aid.
Meanwhile, Banten province will follow suit after Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto approved PSBB status for the region, as confirmed by the government’s spokesperson on COVID-19 mitigation Ahmad Yurianto on Sunday (12 April).
PSBB in Banten province applies to Tangerang City, Tangerang District, and South Tangerang City-which border directly with the capital, Detik reported.
Under PSBB, public transportation services are allowed to carry a limited number of passengers. Several essential business sectors — such as logistics, utilities and media — can continue their operations. Those who still have to work outdoors must wear face masks and practice physical distancing.
Schools, entertainment hubs, and public places such as sports centers will be closed. Activities or gatherings involving more than five people are also banned under PSBB.
The PSBB measures are stipulated in the Minister of Health’s Regulation No.9/2020 regarding guidelines for the implementation of the said measures.
