National Development Minister Lawrence Wong broke down in tears midway through his speech in Parliament on Wednesday (25 March) as he thanked Singapore’s healthcare and frontline workers battling against the COVID-19 outbreak.

Mr Wong, who also co-chairs the COVID-19 multi-ministry taskforce, was delivering a ministerial statement on the recent additional measures to reduce local transmission of the virus.

As he expressed appreciation to the ‘unsung heroes’ who have worked round-the-clock to battle against the COVID-19 crisis, the minister abruptly stopped the speech and asked for a minute to compose himself.

“Words are not enough,” said Mr Wong, his voice quavered with emotion. “Please give me a minute.”

He then continued, “Words are not sufficient to express our appreciation for so many Singaporeans going all out to fight the virus. And I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who is doing their part.”

Many netizens were touched with Mr Wong’s emotional speech and praised his leadership throughout the unprecedented crisis.

Some netizens expressed their supports for Mr Wong to be the next Prime Minister.

However, some netizens were not convinced with Mr Wong’s emotional reaction and called it an act to win more votes.

There were others who focused on the subject at hand and called the minister to impose a lockdown in Singapore.

Some commented that the government has made bad decisions in dealing with the COVID-19 crisis.

A few netizens even brought up about the Central Provident Fund (CPF) to be released to the people.
