Intercultural Theatre Institute (ITI), an independent theatre school for contemporary artists, will be presenting a multicultural adaptation of 4.48 Psychosis from 12–14 March 2020 at Drama Centre Black Box.

Written by renowned British playwright Sarah Kane, combining lyricism with dark humour, 4.48 Psychosis is an unvarnished look at the difficulty of questioning and communicating with the outside world through the lens of depression.

Two decades after its premiere at London’s Royal Court Theatre in June 2000, ITI is set to present a fresh interpretation of the modern classic, which will be performed in four different languages: English, Korean, Malayalam, and Mandarin.

This year’s graduating cohort will be directed by award-winning director and ITI alumnus Andy Ng Wai-shek. Ng is an acclaimed director, actor, and playwright whose awards include Director of the Year at the 2019 International Association of Theatre Critics (Hong Kong) Critics Awards for his experimental production, Ink Maze.

Commenting on his take on the play, Ng said, “I am not interested in showing the audience what depression or a psychotic mind is. To me, 4.48 Psychosis is about a fight between reason and sentiment, between life and theatre, between an individual and her world, between longing and disappointment, or simply about someone who can’t help loving too much.”

ITI’s graduating cohort performs three publicly presented plays as part of their curriculum. 4.48 Psychosis is their first graduation show for 2020.

This year’s graduating cohort includes students from India, Malaysia, South Korea, and Taiwan.
