Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT) will be presenting ‘Ballet Illuminations’ in Malaysia this April. This will be the 11th year that the SDT is performing at Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) and the 6th year at Performance Arts Centre of Penang (penangpac).
SDT will be offering masterclasses with Artistic Director Janek Schergen on Saturday, 25 April (Foundation level) and Sunday, 26 April (Intermediate level), 10am – 11.30am, at klpac, and also on Saturday 2nd May (Foundation level) and Sunday, 3 May (Intermediate level), 10am – 11.30am, at penangpac.
What’s more, for the first time ever, SDT will be awarding a total of four scholarships to its prestigious Intensive Ballet Programme, worth RM2,500 each (S$830), to two students who attend the masterclasses in klpac and two to those who attend in penangpac.
Guided and taught by Janek Schergen together with selected faculty members, the Intensive Ballet Programme will provide students with a comprehensive training in ballet technique including pointe work, variations, contemporary dance, and seminars, to build them up to become well-rounded and versatile dancers.
Not forgetting, there will be a students’ performance on the last day of the program for families and friends to attend.
This year, in Kuala Lumpur, SDT will be performing The Four Temperaments by George Balanchine, Organ Concerto by Nils Christe, and Fives by Choo-San Goh. Meanwhile, at Penang, the company will be performing Piano Concerto No.2, Opus 102 by Edmund Stripe, The Nutcracker pas de deux, Evening Voices by Timothy Rushton, and Paquita by Marius Petipa.
Janek Schergen commented, “Singapore Dance Theatre began its annual visits to Malaysia for performances in 2010, with our first invitation from klpac. The audiences there welcomed SDT with a warmth and generosity that has led to our annual visits and now we find ourselves looking forward, each year, to our annual season in Malaysia. As penangpac extended an invitation to SDT, we were glad to find a second theatre where we could show ourselves to Malaysian audiences.”
